Malcolm Holcombe / Gamblin’ House
The big noise this week is the anticipation of Malcolm Holcombe’s in-store concert here on Saturday afternoon. Malcolm’s latest opus “Gamblin’ House” is a sprawling street snarly chestnut of a bluesy songwriter CD. Sort of a Tom Waits-ian vibe beaming from western North Carolina in it’s own marvelous way. We’re expecting a crowd so come early and take in a surprise we are planning for your enjoyment, hang out, and YES, do some shopping, including a copy of a Malcolm CD.
Mr. Holcombe’s new album, “Gamblin’ House” (Echo Mountain), his fifth that’s still in print, largely tamps down his most arresting traits — his whip-crack growl and almost violent attack on guitar — and the songs aren’t as poignant as his best ones of the past. But the CD’s bittersweet, country-folk music with a raging man at its core reminds us there is no one on the contemporary scene like Mr. Holcombe, who somehow can convey raw fury and deep affection at the same time. —Wall Street Journal.
