March 19, ‘08 Greetings Music Lovers
March 19, 2008 Greetings Music Lovers Kind of a quiet week for new releases with the notable exceptions of the awe inspiring splendor of Daniel Lanois’ “Here Is What Is” together with the big noise this week being as well the anticipation of Malcolm Holcombe’s in-store concert here on Saturday afternoon. Malcolm’s latest opus “Gamblin’ House” is a sprawling street snarly chestnut of a bluesy songwriter CD. Sort of a Tom Waits-ian vibe beaming from western North Carolina in it’s own marvelous way. We’re expecting a crowd so come early and take in a surprise we are planning for
your enjoyment, hang out, and YES, do some shopping, including a copy of a Malcolm CD. So I retract my original statement. This is not a quiet week. This IS the week 40 years ago in 1968 that Otis Redding’s (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay hit #! on the chart in America. Man what a song and what a performance and what a vibe. The king of soul is gone long live the king. Thank goodness for Macon, Georgia.
In the Way To Go Dept: amongst all the wall to wall noise and rubble in Austin, Texas at the SXSW Music Conference last week the unstoppable Belleville Outfit had some really nice moments including performances at the Austin Walter Hyatt Tribute along side of Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Lyle Lovett amongst other Austin royalty, appearing on the 6 O’clock news singing and talking, and Belleville Outfit won 5th place in Best New Band 2007-2008 Austin Music Awards. As I said “WAY TO GO”. And we are expecting a bunch more of their cd Wanderin’ back in here at Horizon, if they have any left
after that week. Up next week: we can all look forward to new releases by Tim O’Brien and the New Waybacks (featuring Warren Hood) and the Raconteurs due in 3/25 And the next week April 5 Saturday, Tyler Ramsey is in here for a special solo acoustic in-store set taping for WNCW 88.7 at 3pm as a warm up and meet and greet prior to the Full band concert at 8:30 that night at The Handlebar. I gotta go listen to Schubert and eat homemade chocolate cookies now. One must keep ones priorities in life.
