Portishead / THIRD on CD & 2LP

by Gene

After a ten year hiatus Portsihead returns with a CD and Deluxe 2LP set. Titled THIRD, the album has 11 tracks and is 49 minutes 13 seconds. “I have to say I was mightily impressed by that Portishead single. So much so I couldn’t wait for the album. Here’s their imaginatively 3rd album called ‘Third’ which is available on CD, 2LP, the music is amazing. It’s Portishead alright but the trip hop has been replaced by loads of amazing beats and samples — there’s some incredible drum sounds on this album. The pace is slow, the vocals are unmistakably Beth Gibbons (ie so fragile they sound like they’re gonna snap in your ears) and the music sounds mardy still. It’s certainly not a coffee table album like the 1st one was. The use of electronics is quite inspiring as they end up making a really old sounding record which sounds more like the Silver Apples & Ennio Morricone than anything really. It’s really quite fantastic the way they’ve cobbled this record together to make it sound like an old record. A future dark cinematic masterpiece. —normanrecords.com
