North Mississippi Allstars in-store Thursday, New John Hiatt & Al Green is back!
Last week was Bob Dylan’s 67th birthday on May 24th and I completely overlooked it. So please excuse me and take a moment to salute the accomplishments of Bob Dylan wherever you are as you read this. I am continually in awe of the astounding catalogue of songs and performances and inspiration he has blessed us these decades since the early ‘60’s. It’s cool to have been alive during the same times that he has been. Could this be why we haven’t changed the Dylan display up front here even though it’s been up since last August when his Dylan retrospective collections came out? Why change it? Dylan now more than ever as the signs say is still working. Y’all keep buying his stuff and it’s more powerful and relevant than 90% of the new releases out these days. Try this video of Neil Young doing All Along The Watch Tower as a quick bench mark of all things Dylan. Ok, done.
Returning to the now….It’s a big ole Horizon sty-lee week here in down town Greenville. We got new releases from 2 of our sho-nuff favorite southern-centric legends. Mr. Al Green returns with a real deal RnB shot across the bow of all the prefab neo soul wanna-be’s and poseurs. As well John Hiatt brings on another set of gritty songwriter soul poured from the well of wisdom that brought us his classics like Bring The Family, Slow Turning and Crossing Muddy Waters.
In the live music line up it’s home run heroes big time as The North Mississippi Allstars do an in-store here at 4pm Thursday to celebrate their new CD Hernando and get y’all primed and warmed up for their full show at The Handlebar at 8:30pm when our gal pal Amy LaVere and her Memphis serious-ness opens the show. That’s what I’m talking about (Memphis In The Meantime, yo). And then the world will be watching as President George Bush speaks at Furman University on Saturday, but we’ll all be watching when our own Col. Bruce Hampton & The Quark Alliance brings the sonic politics of rock, jazz and blues ideology to The Bohemian Café Saturday night. I know which one I want to hear!
Apologies and good news as we ran out of the new Bonnie Prince Billie CD last weekend and now have plenty back in and of course we have the LP in stock as well. Rock on Bonnie fans; relax knowing we also have a ton of all related CDs and LPs from the sprawling empire of Bonnie Prince, Palace Brothers and Will Oldham.
Having said all the above, let me just add as well that we know it’s tough out there for many folks with gas prices, food prices, bank/housing crunches. We are hanging tough and wrestling with the same evils. For that reason we try really hard everyday to have a ton of cheap shopping options in our used CDs, LPs, DVD movies, and books and free concerts and the like all here in one easy location for you.
Thanks and Come see us.
