WASTED WINE- Saturday August 16, 3pm in-store concert, CD release party and WNCW Radio Taping for Tower of Song!
Wasted Wine, A folk duo from Greenville
Robert Gowan and Adam Murphee, both members of local hip-hop group The Dreaded Paranoids, play what they call an eclectic mix of “blend elements of American folk, European art song, country, Southern gospel, Southern hip-hop, and contemporary classical music.”
Gowan and Murphee have toured coffee shops and bars in the Greenville area for the past two years. This persistence landed Wasted Wine a slot in last year’s and this year’s Music in the Woods Concert Series at Paris State Mountain Park. The band also finished in the semifinals of the 2008 Open Mic Shootout at the renowned Eddie’s Attic venue in Decatur, Ga.
Though Wasted Wine plays a wide variety of styles, the duo seems most at home with European folk. A majority of its tracks showcase classical violin, acoustic guitar and accordion as the lyrics narrate a rustic tale or storied history. Daniel Morgan is alluded to in the track “Shining Sea,” for example.
Both musicians exchange vocal duties, and Gowan’s deeper, at times, scratchier voice perfectly complements the more nasal, jangled vocals of Murphee. As a part of Broken Records, Wasted Wine attempts to help encourage a more varied local music scene. “The main problem,” Gowan said, “lies in the fact that there are very few places to play and even fewer that support a band like ours.”
Wasted Wine recently finished and pressed its debut album, “And when you wake up,” which should be available in time for its Music in the Woods show in Greenville on July 12. The band has also released a free mix tape on its MySpace page that includes album tracks, alternative versions and several oddities not included on the album.
Rocks like: “Castaways and Cutouts” by The Decemberists, “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel, “The Bitter End” by Right Away, Great Captain!
