It may be hotter than the hinges on the gates of Hades but it’s a cool low key week in here. Every morning I play the new Tony Rice CD “Night Flyer: The singer Songwriter Collection” and start my day with soothing always amazing artistry of Tony Rice. In this latest Rounder Records collection 17 timeless vocal tracks from Rice’s catalogue are compiled including 3 previously unreleased goodies. The songs Tony takes on are a delightful kaleidoscope of chestnuts known and lesser known from the books of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Ian Tyson, John Mayall, John Starling, Larry Rice, Bob Dylan, Norman Blake, Jerry Reed, and even a Tom Waits tune! Tony’s voice though largely unavailable due to throat and health issues for a number of years is displayed here in a way that reminds me for the umpteenth time why he is, despite his truncated singing career, in my opinion one of the most significant singers in the current and past generation of Bluegrass, Folk and American music. Of course his ridiculously amazing guitar playing shines throughout.
