First things first. Yes, Livingston Taylor is in Greenville here and at The Peace Center. Yes, Silver Jews are playing right here Saturday at noon — read the above headline and keep reading. Yes, Euphoria kicks off on Thursday. Click here for all the details. Yes, The Handlebar has Dubconscious Thursday and Afromotive Friday. AND YES The Bohemian Café Celebrates its 4th Anniversary this weekend with blues and jazz blaster Mack McCloud Friday night and Silver Jews Saturday noon and Sirsy Saturday night all FREE. We may not be Austin or Brooklyn but I’m worn out just thinking about all the fun stuff. Mercy! Downtown Greenville: West End to North End getting busy.

Plus here in Record Store we have a slew of new releases like Michael Franti’s All Rebel Rockers, Calexico (I love them!), Don Chambers & Goat (he plays here in the café Tuesday night), the buzz band off the week Okkervil River and don’t forget we got the every sprawling batch of used CDs and the South Carolinas best vinyl selection new and especially used records just sitting here waiting for your shopping delight. We also got in some nice used stereo gear at easy take home prices, and books everywhere. And Oh yeah, METALLICA releases a new one on Friday. What a dang mess. All I really want to do is play over and over a cheapo scruffy out of print Allman Brothers & Wet Willie used CD I just took in yesterday. Don’t worry I know my limitations. Turn off your TV and COME SEE US.
Here’s the Silver Jews thing…

Listen, I’m a late arriver to the whole Silver Jews thing, but so what? I love these records. This guy David Berman and crew definitely has my ear by the tail. Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea his latest opus from June of this year has that Smog style narrative starry eyed James McMurtry goes to Bonnie Prince Billy twangie stuff that makes the day goes so well and makes the urge to take my self serious get toned way down. So WHOAH! What happened was a few days ago our phone rang and it was nice lady from Drag City saying “Let’s do an in-store & radio taping for WNCW when The Silver Jews drive from Asheville (they play The Grey Eagle Friday 9/12) to Atlanta (Saturday 9/13 at The Variety Playhouse).” So I said Silver Jews? Drag City artists? Great jumping indie vinyl googly-moogly: Of Course, bring it on. So there you go and here they come. Wham, bam, thank you Drag City Records in that urban trend vortex known as Chicago! Following just a few weeks after the earth-shaking May release by Mr. Bonnie here comes another blast of great music, great personalities and …well, what more could I want? How about an in-store? Especially when it all comes fronted by a new Silver Jews musical opus! That’s the kind of people Drag City is – one month it’s Bonnie “Prince” Billy, the next month David Berman and Silver Jews – then 3 months later the band visits Greenville.

Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is a new evolution in Silver Jews history. Over the years, Silver Jews records have see-sawed back and forth between urban electric rock trips and country-arsed acoustical rock reveries, with Berman acting as poet laureate/non-denominational rabbi over the whole spread. Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea follows the hot-wire act of Tanglewood Numbers with another healthy dose of arena-ready extra-musical narrative jamm. This is Silver Jews-at-the-newfound-peak-of-their-power kind of stuff, and with another handful of jukebox favorites throughout the album, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is destined for a space on the wall of the Silver Jews hall of fame, that much is certain. Beyond that…who knows how much farther beyond the sky the Silver Jews rocket can fly? Yesterday’s provincial indie rock is the root of today’s soulless populism, which leads us to expect Silver Jews to ascend to the concert circuit once trod by Screaming Trees, Afghan Whigs and Dinosaur Jr. — strangers in a strange land, but awesome strangers. And then, lookout everyone. SILVER JEWS in-store here Saturday September 13, 12 noon, tell everyone, bring your mom, have lunch, buy some CDs and LPs and it’s also The Bohemian Café’s 4th Anniversary. Nice!
