Leaves are falling, the Blues are forever, and we got Free stuff for y’all

by Gene

Greetings Music Lovers Everywhere,
Things are moving along nicely. The weather is turning cool. I’m loving the season change, but not loving the inevitable annual leaf raking marathon headed my way. As well we are only 7 days away from this historic but seeming endless election run. Thank goodness Tuesday next week is upon us. Thankfully we didn’t fall into a full on 1929 style depression in the last 4 weeks, but trust me I’m not buying the any sushi at the grocery store lately, just bread, eggs and some bananas, you know what I mean. To the good side it’s exciting and wonderful that this Saturday is the Horizon proclaimed Avett Brothers Day here in Greenville: they are playing a nearly sold out concert at the exalted Peace Concert Hall (PLAYING TO A NOW SOLD OUT CONCERT). To celebrate, we are throwing an all day store wide sale for all ticket holders (bring ‘em, show ‘em and save!). So c’mon join the fun. While you’re here ask about what we got FREE for you.

We got some killer CD samplers and 45rpm records from ultra cool labels and bands and distributors like Bloodshot Records (check their Charlie Pickett re-issue, good grannies it’s real!), our pals at Warp Records, The Kings of Leon, Redeye and ADA Distributors and lots more. That’s FREE STUFF from us to you. That’s how we do it in indie retail — stay off of Amazon and out of Wal-Mart and Best Buy, forget those national chain style shops — stick with the feisty neighborhood sized music fanatic kinda places like Horizon. We got the good stuff those others don’t have or don’t know to tell you about like Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm’s “2 Man Wrecking Crew”, my latest favorite in a long line of recent Blues CDs that are getting heavy play on our store system. The Blues never grow old, neh-vuh. In fact we just can’t get enough of the classic 1965 record Hoodoo Man Blues (now on CD) by the late great Junior Wells (featuring Buddy Guy on guitar) — still on Delmark Records in Chicago and still selling every week. I tole you — the blues are forever, especially now. What else can I say?

A wise man told me last week that we’ll all have to work harder, but more importantly we’ll have to work smarter. Made sense to me. Aaron Berg wrote a song called “Fellow Man Blues” In it he sings:

“…is it any use in crying a lake of unseen tears when the only motion needed, is just to cast away your fear do what it is you can to make a little noise for your fellow man”

Read the rest of his blog and listen or download the song and others.
That’s it for this week. Come see us, before and after you VOTE.
Thanks.
