Shelley (age 23) who works here is a complete Beatles fanatic has been since birth, Aaron (age 25) who works here learned a Beatles song as his first attempt at electric bass age 13, me (age 54) heard the Beatles early on from the start in the sixties and kind of grew up through elementary and Middle school as they evolved and grew from the global irresistible pop rock hit makers into cultural and psychedelic rock era arbiters of cool and setters of the political/philosophical vanguard with their later recordings. As rock music craftsmen they set a standard still being chased 40 years and on. The power and beauty of the songs mostly by Lennon and McCartney but by George Harrison as well leave us with body of work virtually without parallel in pop history. It is a gift and a message for us now and generations to come. So if there was ever a band worthy of a media blitz, internet hoopla and music biz campaign it is The Beatles. Let it be.
By contrast today sees the 16th release from YO LA TENGO as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. Yo La Tengo — they’re the perfect anti-heroes of rock. Like The Beatles they can deliver a pop tune capable of taking your breathe away. I can still remember the evening, the moment when I first heard years ago (on public radio) “Autumn Sweater” and said out loud, who in the heck is that??? And like the Beatles started years ago Yo La Tengo likes to dabble in the experimental and longer forms. No I’m not saying YLT is better than or is the next Beatles, I’m just saying it’s an interesting and very pleasant that they are sharing the same street date. Relax, have an apple.
