GENE’S CLASSICAL PICK 1: PIAZZOLLA and Beyond – London Concertante
More than any other composer since JS Bach, Astor Piazzolla achieved the ultimate synthesis of the musical influences acting upon him — from Bach to jazz to classical music of his contemporaries — while remaining true to his Argentine roots. In this dazzling program, London Concertante goes “beyond” Piazzolla classics and introduces four newly written works by David Gordon and Adam Summerhayes that pay homage to the master.

GENE’S CLASSICAL PICK 2: SCHUMANN-String Quartet/Piano Quartet-Takacs Quartet
The peerless Takács Quartet, continue their exploration of the Romantic chamber music tradition with this disc of Schumann. The Piano Quintet is by far Schumann’s most popular chamber work and one of the most beloved works in the genre. Schumann was the first romantic composer to pair the piano with the string quartet. Schumann studied the string quartets of Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn and his quartet Op 41 No 3 demonstrates these influences. The Takács Quartet are joined by the amazing pianist Marc-André Hamelin.

GENE’S CLASSICAL PICK 3: DAVID LANG – Music from the film (Untitled)
Combines music both challenging and delightful, composed especially for the film with excerpts compiled from his entire discography on the Bang on a Can-affiliated Cantaloupe Music label. (Untitled) serves as perfect introduction to Lang’s work. In recent years David Lang has won the Pulitzer Price and joined the faculty at Yale University.

GENE’S CLASSICAL PICK 4: JORDI SAVALL & Hesperion XXI – Istanbul
Based on ‘The Book of Science of Music,’ published in 1710 by the Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, after many years spent in Istanbul. This unique manuscript enables us to discover rare jewels of Turkish traditional music thus revealing the magic of the incredible city of Istanbul. This city portrait wouldn’t have been complete without selections from the fascinating Armenian and Sephardic repertoire that was also familiar in Istanbul during this time. Maestro Savall sheds new light on a Golden Age of cultural dialogue, with the help of Hespèrion XXI and outstanding Turkish and Armenian guests musicians.
