JASON ISBELL & The 400 UNIT with Archer Vs. Gunmen on February 2 at The Handlebar!

Alabama songwriter delivers with hard-driving, soul, rockin’ alt-country
It is Groundhog Day, and Jason Isbell’s consistently growing shadow is a sure sign that you’ll get a spring back in your step. Firmly establishing himself as much more than an ex-Drive-By Trucker, Jason Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, have found success with his Alabama-edged poetry and electrifying guitar chops. His third album, Here We Rest, released in 2011, finds the songwriter returning to his roots and winning even more critical acclaim. Says the Austin Chronicle: “Few songwriters today write with Isbell’s combination of lyrical economy, deep-seated empathy, and masterstroke axe melodies.” When Jason and the boys played Canada’s legendary Horseshoe Tavern, the small club where the Rolling Stones had once rehearsed, “the band had the crowd hooked from the start,” Americana Review said, adding, “They could work seamlessly from hard-driving, soulful and rocking alt-country, to a wonderful ballad.”

FUTURE ISLANDS, with Exploding Clouds featuring Michael Barksdale,
at The Handlebar Jan 26, 2012

Synth-pop trio channels Wolf Parade, The Cure
Pushing the outside of the envelope further than we pushed it with BellX1, of Montreal, Gomez and the like, Future Islands pushes the Upstate into lush, visceral synth-pop. The band, originally from the … (click for more information) Greenville, NC, and now based in Baltimore, has become the darling of Pitchfork’s blogs and of NPR, among other key taste-makers. Sam Herring helps power the trio, with a vocal range that critics have compared to everyone from Tom Waits to David Bowie. The band, meanwhile, carves a path with fresh sounds that hint at epic ’80s faves like Yaz or early Wolf Parade and vintage new wave like New Order or The Cure. At the same time, the band kills with their electrifying live shows. Reviewing a sold-out show of nearly 700 at LA’s hyper-hip Echoplex, a Pinpoint Music critic said: “If you’re there to let the music take you on a journey of self-exploration through some dark regions of your mind, or simply to dance your ass off, there’s something in Future Islands for you.”

That spooky time of year is quickly drawing near…it’s almost Halloween and time for Moogfest 2011!
Visit www.moogfest.com for complete lineup, tickets, & more! And don’t forget your costume…

Moogfest is a weekend celebration of the creative vision of sonic pioneer Bob Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer and its offspring. The Flaming Lips, Moby, Passion Pit, STS9, Tangerine Dream, TV on the Radio, Special Disco Version: James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, Umphrey’s Mcgee, Amon Tobin: ISAM, Chromeo, Crystal Castles, Flying Lotus, Suicide, Ghostland Observatory, Childish Gambino, M83, Neon Indian, and St. Vincent are just some of the mind-blowing artists gathering for this epic weekend, October 28th-30th in Asheville, NC.

Plus, in what can only be described a Moogfest coup, musician / producer / artist / visionary / thinker and all-round renaissance man Brian Eno will be coming to Moogfest this year. His amazing video installation, 77 MIllion Paintings, will be exhibited for the first time in the USA outside of the West Coast and Eno will also present a mind expanding “Illustrated Talk.” (Separately ticketed events, specially priced for Moogfest attendees. Learn more here.)

Also, Moogfest 2011 is expanding in a big way. In addition to concerts at the Asheville Civic Center Arena, the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, and the Orange Peel, new venues for the weekend will include the newly renovated Asheville Music Hall (formerly Stella Blue), the beautiful and intimate Diana Wortham Theatre and…we’re going outdoors this year! That’s right…stay tuned for more information to come via moogfest.com. Of course, we’ve got tons more in store for your weekend pleasure…workshops, interactive experiences, discussion panels, costume competitions, art shows (hint: Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips is participating!)…and this year there will be a bunch of surprise daytime performances and events all over town on Saturday and Sunday. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for in-the-moment updates on the latest developments.

Weekend passes are still available while supplies last.
Can’t come for the whole weekend? Check out the daily schedule and pick up your single day tickets here. These are currently being offered at a special price.

Greenville SC — On Saturday, October 15, from 6:00 until 9:00pm, McDunn Gallery and Russ Morin Ukuleles present Ukulele Melee!, a fun evening of ukulele music and screening of the film Mighty Uke. The evening will begin with a group ukulele lesson and sing-along followed by an informative discussion led by Russ Morin about how a ukulele is made. To complete the evening, there will be a screening of the film Mighty Uke. The feature documentary Mighty Uke, created Tony Coleman & Margaret Meagher, is a visual feast, filmed in vivid HD, counterbalanced by B/W historical footage and original animation, and accompanied by music, played, composed and introduced by the characters themselves.

Mighty Uke travels the world to seek out ukulele players, documenting this third wave of popularity, exploring the rich history of the uke and learning about the healing effect of music self-played.

Until the late 19th Century, music was either live or homemade. If you wanted to hear music you either went to a concert or you performed it yourself. Music was embedded in our families, our communities and even our work. When the phonograph was introduced in 1877, we began the steady path from musical participants to musical consumers. Now, over 100 years later, individuals and families are discovering anew the joys and healing benefits of self-made music. The easy-to-learn ukulele has definitely had a role in this. Elegant in its simplicity, the uke is as comfortable playing a campfire ditty as it is rocking a Hendrix tune.

One of the best parts about playing the ukulele is encouraging others to jump on board and start making their own music. Mighty Uke has left a trail of new players and uke clubs as it has screened across the world. On October 15, at McDunn Gallery, Ukulele Melee will provide fun inspiration and enlightenment towards this diminutive musical instrument. Ukulele CDs, DVDs and Tee shirts will be available for purchase. Also, an informative and entertaining ukulele exhibition will be on display at McDunn Gallery until November 5, 2011. For information, call McDunn Gallery at (864) 242-0311, or visit more online at ukulele-melee at McDunn Gallery, or russmorin.
