This is a fun week. We got something for almost everyone. The chilled out spooky psychedelia of BROKEN BELLS. The classic JIMI HENDRIX tidal wave with VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE and 4 CD/LP re-issues. And for the 90’s crowd, and old folks who weren’t paying attention, there’s the onslaught of PAVEMENT delights. Pitchfork gave Quarantine: Best Of a rare 10 rating (gasp) — holy snooty trend czars Batman! Me? I’m going to climb into that Paul Motian Trio CD and disappear for hours at a time. And I do dig the tunes that Shins guy James Mercer and finesse wizard Danger Mouse are bringing. It’s really simple this week. As last week.

Jimi Hendrix combined a jazz musician’s fluidity and inventiveness on his instrument with unparalleled rock flair. That he left behind only three studio albums before he died in 1970 made him even more intriguing to subsequent generations, as if his fans were trying to figure out what might have been had he lived. For four decades, they consumed every musical leftover from his short career, no matter how poorly conceived, recorded or packaged it might’ve been. Indeed, hundreds of posthumous Hendrix recordings have been issued, most of them exploitive scraps.

But “Valleys of Neptune” (Sony Legacy) is legit — not quite a lost album, but darn near close in that it compiles 12 previously unreleased studio recordings, most from a key 1969 phase in the guitarist’s career. If it doesn’t tell us anything new about Hendrix, it is a sharp snapshot of a musical genius in the studio during a period of transition. Hendrix revisited older material (”Stone Free,” “Fire,” “Red House”), covered favorite artists (Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love,” Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart”) and finessed newer material (the title song, “Lullaby for the Summer”). With three exceptions, the tracks are blissfully free of the overdubs and other studio manipulations that mar many of his posthumous recordings. Instead, we get a you-are-there document of Hendrix in the last volatile days of his great power trio with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the Experience.

This combo is represented on the majority of the tracks, and its vitality still vibrates the speakers – never more so than on a definitive live-in-the-studio version of “Here My Train A Comin’,” with Hendrix bending vocal and guitar notes with shamanistic verve. He veers off into his own private galaxy as a guitarist during an instrumental version of “Sunshine of Your Love,” and conjures a new world as a lyricist on the title track. On the latter, Hendrix’s fluid rhythm-guitar work underpins images brimming with Apocalyptic foreboding: “See visions of sleeping peaks erupting/Releasing all hell that/Will shake the Earth from end to end.” Not unlike Hendrix’s music itself. —Greg Kot chicagotribune.com

GENE PICK : PAUL MOTIAN – Lost In a Dream
Once in a while, a jazz recording seems to announce itself as a “classic” from the first moment. Lost In A Dream is one such album. It documents the birth of a great new project, captured live at New York’s celebrated Village Vanguard, with repertoire emphasizing Paul Motian’s wonderful ballad writing. New Motian tunes are juxtaposed with older ones, and a free exploration of Irving Berlin’s “Be Careful It’s My Heart” completes a program distinguished by gloriously supple playing from all three participants who are in tune at a high level. Master drummer Motian (born 1931) is heard here with two much younger musicians: saxophonist Potter (born 1971, and with whom he shares already a long playing history), and pianist Moran (born 1975, with whom he had worked only once previously). There is a cragginess in Jason Moran’s piano playing that testifies to deep roots in Thelonious Monk, a quality that Motian – who played with Monk in the 1950s – was bound to identify with. Motian has a Monkish sense of stubborn independence: he remains the most unpredictable of drummers. In the flowing ballads of Lost In A Dream, Motian is as much a sound painter as a time-keeper. There is a lot of space in the music, used brilliantly by all three players. Chris Potter, long recognized as the one of the most outstanding saxophonists of his generation, delivers an extraordinarily inspired performance in the trio, playing with great emotional conviction. —Linda, imwan.com

RECENT STUFF PICK 1 BROKEN BELLS
Who: The Shins’ singer-guitarist James Mercer and producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), who’ve taken time off from their usual gigs to team for a new self-titled disc of left-field psych-pop. Sounds Like: Spooky psychedelia with a British Invasion flavor. Burton outfits Mercer’s beautiful melodies and with analog-synth swooshes, slo-mo kick drums and horn breaks. The mellow punch of “Vaporize” features zippy organ and rolling snare, and Mercer goes for a T-Pained falsetto on the catchy, electro-kicky “The Ghost Inside.” read more: —WILL HERMES rollingstone.com

RECENT STUFF PICK 2 PAVEMENT – Quarantine The Past
2010 is the year of the long-awaited PAVEMENT reunion tour, already including 4 sold-out shows in Central Park, headlining major festivals all over the world, and in general underlining the frenzy that awaits the first performances of one of the most important band of the 1990s in a decade. A whole generation of kids who never saw the band now have their chance. This re-mastered mid-priced, 23-track Greatest Hits collection, chosen by the band, ranges from their Top 10 Modern Rock hit “Cut Your Hair” to nearly all their singles, some underrated album tracks, 3 choice pre- Matador cuts and one obscure compilation track singing the praises of REM (?!). Plus new cheap vinyl on all 5 catalogue LPs .”Pavement were one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge from the American underground in the ’90s.” —All Music Guide

RECENT STUFF PICK 3 JIMI HENDRIX – VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE
Jimi Hendrix combined a jazz musician’s fluidity and inventiveness on his instrument with unparalleled rock flair. That he left behind only three studio albums before he died in 1970 made him even more intriguing to subsequent generations, as if his fans were trying to figure out what might have been had he lived.

BROKEN BELLS – Who: The Shins‘ singer-guitarist James Mercer and producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse (a.k.a.
Part Kanye West, part Brian Eno, producer-musician Brian Burton — a.k.a. Danger Mouse — has defined himself with his excellent taste in brilliant misfits. His biggest smash was Gnarls Barkley, with whom he turned oddball former Dirty South rapper Cee-Lo into a falsetto swinging soulman on the sublime “Crazy,” triggering moving karaoke performances worldwide. He’s helped blues-rock freaks the Black Keys find their groove; helped midcareer weirdo Beck locate his mojo on 2008’s Modern Guilt; even molded his mash-up sensibility to the arty David Lynch soundtrack project Dark Night of the Soul.

His latest one-off, Broken Bells, could be his biggest stretch yet: It pairs him with career introvert James Mercer, the sublimely melodic singer-songwriter of the Shins. The two have a little history — one track together on Dark Night — but Mercer might seem an odd match for the producer whose first big idea was combining the Beatles with Jay-Z, and whose trademark move is melding hip-hop-rooted samples and beats with vintage psychedelia.

It turns out the two pop-science geeks are a perfect match. Danger Mouse pushes Mercer’s gorgeous, existential tunecraft outward with Day-Glo dynamics. “‘Cause they know, and so do I/The high road is hard to find,” Mercer sings on the opening chorus of Bells. The lyrics are about the loneliness of decision-making — they may refer to life in the trenches of normalcy, or, perhaps, to Mercer’s recent professional decisions (he more or less fired two members of the Shins). But what sweeps you up are the sweet, ascending verses, the rolling chorus and the Danger Mouse touches: analog-synth swirls, slo-mo kick drums, a melancholy bass line — hip-hop for turned-on shut-ins.

Cool variations on the Gnarls formula — Danger and a quirkily excellent singer making arty, transcultural pop — run throughout the album. “Vaporize” begins with Mercer’s fey workaday voice and a strummed acoustic, then takes off with smeared snares, bouncy organ and a jaunty Bacharach-David-style horn break. It’s punchier than the Shins, and livelier than you’d expect from a song whose title suggests innovative marijuana consumption — an anthem of solidarity for malcontents, teenage and otherwise, not unlike “Crazy.” The catchy, midtempo “The Ghost Inside” even has Mercer singing in a T-Pained falsetto — it’s not hard to imagine it on the hit parade, along with the soaring, U2-flavored “October.”

Broken Bells isn’t all crossover ambition. Tracks like “Your Head Is on Fire” — a drum-machine space waltz floating between Syd Barrett and something from Brian Eno’s Another Green World — won’t make the short list of Glee covers. But with a new Shins record reportedly brewing, Mercer seems to be following some of the instructions in his own songs: Life is short, brother — go for it. The introverted indie guy isn’t gone, and he’s still not afraid to tell you that we’re ultimately alone on this journey. “If you want to follow me, you should know,” he sings. “I was lost then/And I’m lost now/And I doubt I’ll ever know which way to go.” Maybe. But for the moment, in Danger Mouse, Mercer has found a promising fellow traveler. —WILL HERMES, http://www.rollingstone.com

OK. I’m about over this cold and or wet winter extravaganza thing. For now as I write this blog I’m holed up in the dubmaster sonic research lab and I’m listening to BALMORHEA and then CHOPIN over and over; makes a most enlightening and refreshing audio spa. Balmorhea’s new release is called Constellations and that’s a perfectly apt title. This contemplative all instrumental masterpiece from Austin Texas origins is very nice if the folk-chamber music-modern impressionism like Debussy, Edgar Meyer/Bela Fleck, Iron and Wine or John Fahey is your zone. And then there’s FREDERIC CHOPIN! Monday marked the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1810. Fine arts aficionados and popular music folks alike have been drawn to the perfumed melodies and awe inspiring piano magic of his romantic compositions since the days he wrote them. I am no exception. Melancholic guilty pleasure? Maybe. Jaw dropping flights of mercurial piano fantasy? Definitely. Perfect for shut in winter days with snow and rain coming down and the heat turned way up. Works great also in spring when porch season opens (be still my heart!).

Back down here on the ground the new releases include a much anticipated new JOHN HIATT, a long overdue offering from PETER GABRIEL project-land, new inspirations from The HOLMES BROTHERS, raw raucous blues from GUITAR SHORTY, gentle Latin stylings from JOSH ROUSE, and yes much more.

HOLMES BROTHERS – Feed My Soul CD on sale $13.99 The Holmes Brothers’ Feed My Soul, produced by platinum-selling artist (and longtime friend) Joan Osborne, is a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and country. Their amazing, signature three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell Holmes gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy Dixon’s soaring falsetto and Sherman Holmes’ rich baritone brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform. Over the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers have been feeding the souls of their devoted and ever-growing fan base. Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming perfectly complement Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing. The band easily blends Saturday night’s roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday morning’s church service.

Malian maestro Bassekou Kouyate is a virtuoso picker and musical visionary whose work blurs the lines between West African and American roots music. Bassekou’s instrument, the ngoni, is a “spike lute” and an ancestor of the banjo, sharing its taut-skinned drum body, percussive attack, and varied picking techniques. Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni Ba, the first-ever group built around not one but four ngonis-all played by members of his family.

Out of the same West African ground that spawned the ancient Mali empire, comes Basseko Kouyate and his band armed with their four ngonis. Kouyate’s latest album with his band Ngoni Ba-I Speak Fula, brings eleven warm earth passages prospered by the small stringed ancestor to the banjo. Kouyate was long ago inspired to move the music beyond where his ngoni forefathers had gone, and as result has become a savior for the instrument and a symbol of innovative Malian music. Kouyate’s wife, Sacko is a vocalist on the album, adding yet more complexion to this moving mirror of aural history. –from parasitesandsycophants.com

“Have One On Me,” the third album from singer-songwriter, fashionista and harpist Joanna Newsom is a sprawling, three-disc masterpiece that finds Newsom at the top of her game, crafting beautiful and complex compositions that spellbind and stir. In 2004, Newsom released her quirky debut, “The Milk Eyed Mender,” which established her as one of the main characters in the then-blossoming freak folk movement, spearheaded by Devendra Banhart. The album was comprised of simple folk compositions, at the center of which was Newsom’s childlike and squeak-prone voice, which was a dealbreaker for many, though others, critics included, found it endearing and intriguing.

Her 2006 follow-up, “Ys,” found Newsom experimenting with longer compositions and fuller arrangements, employing famous American composer and musician, Van Dyke Parks, to arrange full orchestra accompaniments. The album also found Newsom growing magnificently as a songwriter and vocalist, her voice more restrained and controlled, and her lyrics more poetic and thematically complex than anything found on “The Milk Eyed Mender.” “Have One On Me” finds Newsom not only demonstrating even stronger vocal abilities and songwriting techniques, but also making a logical next-step in terms of style and sound. Many of the qualities that made “Ys” such the memorable listening experience it was are still present on “Have One On Me:” lengthy compositions, complex arrangements and beautifully written lyrics. However, the songs on “Have One On Me” are at once more accessible and even more complex, demonstrating Newsom’s significant artistic growth. The album also find’s Newsom experimenting a bit with new styles. One such experiment appears in the form of “Good Intentions Paving Company,” which finds Newsom trading her harp for a piano for a rollicking, groovy swagger through a ’70s-Joni Mitchell-inspired number that stands as one of the most unique and immediately enjoyable songs Newsom has ever crafted. Lyrically, “Have One On Me” is far more personal and direct than Newsom’s previous work. Many of the songs are about love and the loss of love, presumably inspired by Newsom’s break-up with fellow singer-songwriter, Bill Callahan, as well as her current relationship with Saturday Night Live cast member Andy Samberg. One track that best demonstrates this is “Baby Birch,” one of the most stirring and emotionally moving songs on the album. The song sways and soothes beautifully through its first 6 minutes, a distorted guitar subtly snarling intermittently at Newsom’s lone voice and harp. Quite suddenly, the song reaches its climax with staggering drums, a quickened pace and a small choruses of voices, the effect of which is absolutely sublime. Though an extremely lengthy listen (more than 2 hours), “Have One On Me” is a remarkably consistent collection of songs that functions just as well as three separate pieces as one large whole. The faint of heart need not apply, but those willing will be rewarded greatly. —Ben Weissenborn, cmlife.com
